Are you a part-time commuter?

Many Deal and Sandwich commuters don't travel up to London every day - but there is still no equivalent of a rail season ticket for part-time workers. This means that part-time workers must buy expensive one-off tickets, or season tickets which they then waste on the days they don't work.

In October 2013 the last Government finally announced there would be a trial of flexible rail tickets for part time workers on a busy London commuter route. Almost two years on and the millions of part time and flexible workers who commute to work by rail are still waiting whilst the Government and the rail industry drag their feet.

Our labour market has changed and part time work is on the increase. There are now well over 8 million part time workers in the UK, 4 million who work flexibly and over 750,000 on zero hours contracts and yet there is almost zero flexibility in our fares and ticketing system to make rail travel affordable for this vital army of workers.

This is also a gender equality issue, as 75% of part time workers are women.

High Speed - bringing more visitors (and jobs) to Deal
Praise for Southeastern's new-style marketing

Using web, email, online video and social media, the train operator aims to fill more day-time seats  on the new all-day High Speed service to bring more visitors to Deal and the Kent Coast. Dover Deal and Sandwich are their online "Destination of the month", featured in a barrage of emails also featuring "Free things to do" , a Summer Guide leaflet and special fare promotions.

"It's got off to an imaginative start, and it's great that they're not just relying on more people travelling up to London. Down here on the coast, this has real potential to create new jobs and boost local businesses - as more people get to know that we are now only an hour and 20 minutes from the capital." said train campaigner IAN KILLBERY.

Canterbury-based ad agency Creative Minds is filming a series of short videos to feature interesting places on the Southeastern network, including sequences on Deal Beach, Wingham Wildlife Park and Dover's clifftop walk. Producer PHILIP CERVERA said,"Our crew asked local people where best to film, and lively presenter CARA EDNEY added a quirky touch to appeal to a London-based demographic. We aim to develop the series and welcome suggestions for more places to film."
You can help bring more visitors to our area
What local  #SEhiddengems can you suggest for people to discover by train?
"The rail company is looking for more local "hidden gems" that London day-trippers can discover by train,  - and are filming Heart Radio presenters JK and Lucy going off on "mystery twit-trips" by rail to destinations tweeted in on social media," said TOM ROWLAND, "Let's make sure our local attractions feature in the emails that are sent out to commuters."
Early success of Deal's HS service
Numbers up, future looks good
Unpublished figures show passenger numbers  up by a regular 1,000 a day since January. Southeastern's DAVID STATHAM told Trains4deal that the success of the Coastal High Speed makes it "very likely" to continue when the new franchise contract starts in 2018
